Poem: “The reasons that induced Dr. Swift to Write a Poem Called the Lady’s Dressing Room” by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

12.10.2011

So, Montagu was an early kick-ass feminist, who was pretty much crucified for the mistakes she made because she dared to be female and outspoken in the 18th century. Not that she was perfect but you have to give a lady in that time a LOT of leeway, imo. This poem is a hilarious response to Swifts, as the title indicates and it really makes you feel vindicated for all the gross things he says in his.

Translation/summary: [originally published anonymously. She explains that the “lady” in question is a prostitute who refuse to give the clergyman his money back when he couldn’t perform. She tries to subvert Swift’s style (changes the pastoral names).
